How can I then return in happy plight
That am debarr'd
the benefit of rest,
When day's oppression is not eas'd by night,
But
day by night and night by day oppress'd,
And
each, though enemies to other's reign,
Do in consent shake hands
to torture me,
The one by toil, the other to complain

far I toil, still farther off from thee?

Die Vertonung des Sonett 28 von William Shakespeare für Alt und Gitarre hält sich im Verhältnis von Singstimme und Begleitung an den polyphonen Satz, wie er in elizabethanischen und jakobinischen Lautenliedern, vor allem bei John Dowland üblich war. Der Charakter des Liedes ist dem Text entsprechend unruhig und beinahe verstört.
